The Poor Box

    • Fine William & Mary walnut, ebony, and marquetry
    • Tapered square pedestal form
    • Hinged cover with tooled brass loop handle and coin slot
    • Inlaid inscription: “Pray remember ye poor”
    • Tulips and carnations within a foliate border
    • Walnut cushion moulded edge above four inlaid sides
    • Front inlaid with Royal Cipher and engraved white metal shields
    • Sides inlaid with Heraldic arms of the Glass Sellers’ Co & the City of London
    • Reverse inlaid with inscription: “The Gift of John Green Senira Member of this compani March TE 25 1690”
    • Tulip and carnation sprays on each side within matching foliate borders
    • Walnut cushioned pedestal foot
    • Dimensions: Cover (18.5 x 18.5 cm), Plinth (19 x 19 cm), Height (25.7 cm), Sides at top (16.5 cm) and base (17.5 cm)

The Master’s Chair

    • George 1st red walnut and giltwood Master’s Chair
    • High upholstered back with a pierced arched giltwood crest
    • Crest carved with shells, acanthus, and scrolls around a shield
    • Shield carved with the Glass Sellers’ Arms
    • Mirror inset with a later plate and “M.P.”
    • Shaped padded arms on shaped supports
    • Stuff-over seat on shell carved cabriole legs
    • Joined by a turned “H shaped” stretcher
    • Circa 1715
    • Restoration to rails and block
    • Note: Master A L Howard repaired the chair on 15.12.1943. The original Walnut was fine but other parts were affected by worm or beetle. These were replaced by Burmese Pyinkado wood (Xylia dolobriformis), expected to last for very many years.

The Beadle’s Mace

    • Finial of disc form with an urn and floral swag cast finial
    • Floral drape cast moulded frame on an acanthus cast socle
    • Inlaid with a reverse engraved mirrored and verre eglomise circular panel (cracked) of the Glass Sellers’ Arms
    • Reverse with a plain mirror plate
    • Later two-section turned ebony staff with the original upper threaded mount and later lower mounts
    • In a mahogany case
    • Diameter of panel frame: 18.5 cm
    • Height from socle to finial: 20.5 cm
    • Height of staff: 154 cm

The Immediate Past Master’s Chair

    • Style: Late 17th Century oak high-backed chair
    • Features:
      • Arched panelled back with a foliate carved arched crest
      • Fluted frieze that continues to scale carved scrolled arms on fluted columns
      • Plank seat with a fluted rail on fluted turned tapered legs
      • Joined by fluted bar stretchers
      • Inset with a Charles II rosewood and marquetry panel inlaid with the Arms of the Glass Sellers’ Company
      • Inscribed “Major Humphrey Kilby, Mr Richard Sadler, John Green Wardens 1671”, the panel 41.5 by 67 cms
      • The reverse of the chair is inset with two brass plaques
    • First Plaque reads: “Presented to The Worshipful Company of Glass Sellers in 1974 by Cyril H Nathan Master 1934/35 and his son Michael R Nathan Master 1973/74”
    • Second Plaque states: “The Company’s Minute of 6th February 1672 records authorization of a payment for a chest lately made for the Company and undoubtedly the piece of marquetry forming the chair back was part of the lid of this chest”
